Morning Buzz host Jonathan Zarov interviews Marquette Neighborhood Association Street Tree Committee Members Leslie Schroeder, John Coleman, & TR Loon.
Initially focused on the trees affected by the upcoming Jenifer Street reconstruction project, the committee has been working to raise awareness of the tree replacement policy known as The Right Tree in the Right Place which dictates that all trees planted under primary power lines will be replaced exclusively with low-growing ornamental trees. These replacement trees have a maximum growing height of 15-20 feet; in contrast the existing mature canopy trees grow to a height of 50-70 feet. This is so that the trees will not need to be pruned around the power lines. In doing this the multitude of benefits bestowed by canopy trees: habitat, shade and cooling, water retention, noise reduction, CO2 sequestration, and many more, will never be realized with these low growing ornamental trees.
